Quarry Tours & Classroom Visits |
The Shelly Company recognizes the importance of keeping an eye on the future. With that in mind, a comprehensive educational program has been established to teach students of all ages about how the materials mined in our quarries are utilized in products the students use every day.
For younger students, field trips to our quarries are available. Experts will guide the students through the quarry, explaining the types of rocks mined there as well as explaining the process used to mine those rocks. Hands-on activities such as cookie mining, cupcake coring and birdseed mining, along with PowerPoint presentations and visual aids including fossils and rock samples, help the students understand the mining process.
For older students, more in-depth tours are available and can include a stop at the Company’s Quality Control Facility, where materials are tested for consistency and quality. Even college students have found one of the Company’s quarries to provide an excellent backdrop to the education process. For those classes that cannot make it to the quarry, representatives also provide in-class presentations.
